Life at LDM | Attorney Spotlight, Chelsea E. Gavin
What is your definition of success?
At work, success for me is getting to the right outcome the right way. To me, being a lawyer with high ethics and integrity means everything, and so I always want to do things the right way so that the outcome is one I can be proud of and stand behind. In life generally, I think success is obtaining the feeling of a perfect calibration between being a mom, a wife, and a lawyer—a process I am still very much learning.
What's the most unique part about working at LDM?
The most unique part about working at LDM so far is getting to try a variety of practice areas. Everyone seems very supportive of the process that young attorneys go through to find their niche. The second most unique thing, coming from working at the DA’s Office, is how quiet and focused the office environment is. I used to work in an office connected to the courthouse and corrections, which made for an interesting and loud environment, so getting to come into my own office (that I don’t share with two other people) to work quietly is a unique experience for me and is one that I am very thankful for!
What’s one thing — either industry-related or not — you learned in the last month?
At work, I have recently learned a lot about Nebraska’s UCC and the way Nebraska Courts interpret contractual provisions. At home, I have been learning about toddler “communication temptations” as I help my son grow his vocabulary (currently at 10 words, but who’s counting).
What’s the best advice you can give to someone who is just starting their career?
Stay open-minded and say yes to as many experiences as possible, especially the ones that scare you.
